Why Poor Ventilation Could Be Making Your Allergies Worse (And How to Fix It)
Within an MVHR unit, the filters are located on the outside of the heat recovery core. Their responsibility is to filter the warm, moisture laden air extracted from wet rooms (kitchen, bathroom etc) as well as the fresh air that comes into the home from the outside. This process prevents the build up of mould in the home from reducing internal moisture levels and cleans the air entering the residence. This prevents debris from entering the indoor air and also stops unwanted particles from entering and causing damage to the inner workings of the unit.
The filters used are G3 filters and they are designed to catch coarse dust, or particles which are less than 10 µm. This includes a host of particles such as dust mites, pollen, fly ash and human / animal hair and skin cells. By removing these elements helps produce a cleaner indoor environment. As these elements are caught, filters can become ‘loaded’ or clogged and this prevents them from carrying out their function.
Dust and particles can then enter the system and accumulate on the mechanical components such as the fan blades and motor, potentially reducing their lifespan. This then leads to the heat exchanger becoming clogged, increasing resistance, reducing airflow and decreasing efficiency, which ultimately results in air quality being compromised.
Due to this, it’s important that filters are checked regularly and replaced when necessary.
