Importance of MVHR Filters Maintenance
Mechanical Ventilation with Heat Recovery (MVHR) works by recovering heat from extracted air that would normally be expelled into the atmosphere and transferring this heat to fresh air being drawn into the property via a heat exchanger. A key part of this process is by having filters.
Filtering the air that comes into the system ensures a healthier environment within the property. This process prevents the build-up of mould and debris in our home by reducing internal moisture levels and cleaning the air entering the residence and stopping unwanted particles from causing damage to the inner workings of the unit.
Our Brookvent Filter
The filters that we use are the G3 filter, and they are designed to catch fine dust or particles which are less than 10 µm.
This includes particles such as dust mites, pollen, fly ash, and human/animal hair and skin cells.
Removing these elements helps produce a cleaner indoor environment. As these elements are caught, filters can become ‘loaded’ or clogged and this prevents them from carrying out their function.
Consequence of not replacing your filters
Unnecessary Wear and Tear
Dust and particles can then enter the system and put pressure on the mechanical parts, such as the fan blades, and motor, potentially reducing their lifespan. This leads to the heat exchanger becoming clogged, increasing resistance, reducing airflow, and decreasing efficiency, which ultimately results in air quality being compromised.
The below image shows an extremely clogged filter, which is not what you want!
Health Concerns
Secondly, there can also be immediate problems with your health. For example, itchy eyes, throat, headaches, and much more. If you continue to not to replace your filters, this could lead to possible heart diseases, respiratory illnesses, and overall sickness.
Increase in energy bills
Blocked filters add unnecessary strain to your heat recovery ventilation system. Because your system has to work so much harder in order to cool and heat your home, your energy bills will increase because your system is having to operate harder.
Recommended Replacement Time-Frame
It is important that you check your filters on a regular basis!
We advise replacing filters at least once every 6 months to ensure your system works to its optimum level. So, remember to check your filters regularly to ensure you are reaping all the benefits of your MVHR system.
