A heat pump is a highly efficient, eco-friendly heating unit that can replace or support a traditional boiler or storage water heater, as well as quickly heating or cooling your home.
Air source heat pumps also use electricity to harness and transfer ambient heat for maximum water heating efficiency. This makes them around 2-3 times more energy efficient than conventional electric resistance water heaters, helping you to save money on your heating bills.
For the highest heating performance, you can retrofit a hot water heat pump to work with an existing water heater. By installing your heat pump in a room with excess heat, such as a laundry or utility room, you can further improve your water heating capabilities and lower energy costs. Heat pumps also last for around 10-15 years, compared to 8-12 years for traditional water heaters, so you can install a hot water heat pump with confidence.
How do Heat Pumps Work?
There are two main types of heat pumps: the air-to-water heat pump and the air-to-air source heat pump. Air-to-water versions take heat from the air outside and boost your wet central heating system with it, similar to gas central heating. But how do air source heat pumps work? Air-to-air heat pumps take heat from the air outside and transfer it into your home using fans. They take heat from the air and heat it further, to keep your home temperate.
Air source heat pump disadvantages are that, put simply, if it’s really cold outside, the heat pump is less efficient. In these occasional moments, it is a more expensive option than a gas boiler, as it will use more electricity to do the job. However, even in these circumstances, it is more efficient than a gas boiler – it’s just that electricity is more expensive than gas. It’s always the better environmental option, too, so your conscience stays green.
