Having an extractor fan in your bathroom/kitchen is important because they help to prevent condensation and mould from building up. However, when you have a noisy extractor fan running you may be tempted to switch the fan off. According to a study by waterwise.org, the average shower time is 10 minutes long which is around 150 litres of water per shower. So, imagine if you didn’t have an extractor fan, the humidity levels would build-up, and allow that moist air to travel around the home potentially causing damp and mould to your building or furniture.
What causes the extractor fan to become noisy?
There are many factors that can cause your bathroom or kitchen extractor fan to become noisy.
- The blade or filters can build up dirt or dust making the motor in the fan to work harder.
- Wear and tear on the motor can cause the fan to generate more noise.
- Damage to the motor or bearings.
What can you do to limit the extractor fan to generate noise?
To help prevent your extractor fan to generate loud annoying noises you want to ensure you clean the fan or filter. We would recommend you do this often because fans do collect dirt and dust easily due to the humidity air. Extractor fans are easily cleaned, ensure they are off, remove the vent cover and clean the dust or dirt. Having a clean fan will allow the air to flow through the fan using less energy, which should reduce any noise.
If you still experience noise after you complete this process, this could mean that fan is starting to fail, simply this could be due to wear and tear or damage done to the motor. We would recommend that you replace the extractor fan if you reach this stage.
What options do we have available for you?
We provide extractor fans that have a unique fan impeller design that reduces turbulence to maximize airflow with minimal noise. Firstly we have the airstream Xe and Xe+, which is an intermittent decentralised mechanical ventilation unit. These units can be wall, panel, window, or ceiling mounted extracting stale air directly outside or through a short run of ducting.
Alternatively, if you prefer to have a continuously running fan, we have the airstream DMEV. This is a single-flow decentralised mechanical ventilation unit for continuous running. Ideal for application in the bathroom, toilet and small or medium premises. Take a look at our DMEV range.
