It is often interesting how everyday objects can often blur into the background. The better-designed something is the less you notice it. It completes its function perfectly and it blends completely into its environment. It is only occasionally that something happens to focus your attention on an item and, once again, you marvel at how well it works. Something happened recently to cause me to stop and look again and appreciate the pure joyous simplicity of our basic Brookvent trickle vent.
Our vents are used day in and day out by hundreds of tradesmen up and down the country. They do appreciate the robust build and simplicity of installation which saves them time and avoids failures and complaints. Even though they look at them every day, they probably stopped regarding the clean lines and unobtrusive good looks. That is what happens when you are so very familiar with an item you use.
Customer Enquiry
Our vent team received an enquiry from a building professional. This man had specified our products and seen them installed on high quality projects in his area. He had never built or fitted a window himself, let alone installed trickle vents. But he’s a practical man and felt he could complete a straightforward D.I.Y job. He had employed a local builder to convert his garage into a self-contained playroom. This sort of thing does not come under the auspices of building regulations as it is not a “habitable room” and the job was fairly straight forward. Our friend was very happy with the result. His erstwhile garage had been changed into a sunny playroom that would give him a place to practice his trombone playing or read a book. The building works had been completed in early May and he was looking forward to the warm summer months.
A problem that he experienced
While the standard of workmanship had been in line with his expectations, he noticed a small issue. The room could quickly become a bit stuffy. Of course, he could open the window. But, because of his knowledge of building he realised that that stuffiness would also lead to higher humidity levels and lack of ventilation can cause condensation and mould. He realised that he had not specified any form of background ventilation. Something of an oversight but building regulations do not require it in his structure so the builder had installed windows without vents. The customer wanted a simple way to dispel the damp polluted air and replace it with clean fresh air from outside. He wanted it to be controllable with the ability to leave the room venting throughout the day/night without the risk of intrusion that an open window would risk. He needed window vents from Brookvent.
Customers Next Step
A call to Brookvent and spoke to one of the team. He received the advice he needed, which suggested the SM 1200 vent in a size to fit his window and a similar one on the other side of the building in the door, to create airflow. He was also a little surprised that the Brookvent team could envisage a bit of a problem. Cutting a slot in a window while it is being built in the factory is very easy. But, once the window has been installed, the reveal and brickwork at the head make it a more challenging task. He was glad this problem had been pointed out, but with careful consideration he was able to work out how he could do it. He was confident that the rest of the job would be simple.
Now there was a question of supply. Normally he would be dealing with projects with perhaps two hundred windows. Would Brookvent be able to supply just two? The answer thankfully was yes. While the Brookvent factory is set up for large orders, they were still able to produce and deliver this compact parcel to a residential address.
The slots had been carefully fashioned in the window and door, and our friend know that the Brookvent installation was a simple matter of two screws. He found the screws and opened the packet to review the next step. He had seen this style vent installed on many sites and knew the window fitters made it look very straight forward.
But there was a problem.
It was clear where the screws would go but turning the vent over in his hands, he could not work out how the vent would open and close. The more he looked the more convinced he became that something was missing. Brookvent must have forgotten to pack the mechanism. He picked up the phone and rang the technician he had spoken to before. The result of that telephone conversation was illuminating and somewhat surprising. The technician had listened carefully to the problem. He assured our disconcerted customer that everything was as it should be and, if he could just have a little faith the magic would reveal itself. The technician promised he would make a quick video to show the installation and operation, but he could do that for a few hours. But, if our friend wanted to go ahead it was worth a try.
Then…
20 minutes later. The vents had been installed and the magic had been revealed. Once the vent is attached the parts can move and the vent gracefully lifts itself from the frame and the air is allowed in. Our customer was delighted and no longer needed a video.
This little episode allowed me to, once again, look at our most popular vent and marvel at the simple and effective design. To enjoy watching it work. To know that part of the beauty is that it will be fitted and then work well without fuss or bother for many years to come. The very perfection of the design will make it blur into the background and complete its task all day everyday.
